WORLD SERIES-TORONTO 4 GAMES TO 3 OVER PITTSBURGH

GAME 7 RECAP

TORONTO - AN INITIAL THREE-INNING SHOOTOUT WENT IN FAVOR OF THE BLUE JAYS AS THEY POWERED TO AN 9-5 GAME 7 WIN OVER PITTSBURGH.

PLAYOFF AND WORLD SERIES MVP KENDRY MORALED RIPPED A TWO-STRIKE OFFERING FROM PIRATES STARTER TO DEEP RIGHT-FIELD TO GIVE TORONTO A 2-0 FIRST-INNING LEAD.

AN IAN KINSLER TRIPLE TIED THINGS UP IN THE TOP OF THE NEXT FRAME, BUT A FOUR-RUN BLUE JAY OUTBURST IN THEIR HALF PROVED TO BE ENOUGH. THE PIRATES ADDED THREE MORE IN THE THIRD BUT THE 6-5 TORONTO LEAD HELD THROUGH THE FOURTH, FIFTH AND SIXTH INNINGS.

TORONTO SEALED THE 2010 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WITH  A TRIO OF SEVENTH-INNING RUNS.

MORALES WAS 2-FOR-4 ON THE NIGHT WITH THREE RBI'S ON THE WAY TO A .403 PLAYOFF AVERAGE WITH SEVEN HOMERS AND 19 RUNS BATTED IN. KINSLER AND DARIC BARTON HAD TWO RBI'S IN THE GAME FOR THE PIRATES.

STARTER BEN SHEETS GOT THE WIN WITH FIVE INNINGS OF WORK AND DANIEL BARD (THREE INNINGS) AND SCOT SHIELDS (ONE INNING) HELD PITTSBURGH HITLESS THE SECOND HALF OF THE GAME.

REDS SINKING QUICKLY

FRANCHISE 2010

NO HITTING, NO PITCHING HASTENS SLOW START

BY PAT DORWIN

SPORTSWRITER

PITTSBURGH - FRIDAY'S GAME AGAINST THE PIRATES CAPSULIZED CINCINNATI'S SEASON START.

THE REDS DROPPED TO 3-8 - WITH ALL THREE WINS BY A SINGLE RUN - AND TWO ONE-RUN LOSSES, INCLUDING THE 3-2 DEFEAT AT PITTSBURGH.

DESPITE BATTING JUST .225 AS A TEAM - AND GIVING UP 30 RUNS IN A SEASON-OPENING SWEEP BY ST. LOUIS - THE REDS AREN'T PLAYING ALL THAT BAD.

"REALLY, WE'VE GOT THAT OPENING DEBACLE AND LOSING THREE OUT OF FOUR AT FLORIDA HOLDING US DOWN," SAID FIRST-YEAR MANAGER ??? QUEEN.

CINCY FOLLOWED THE TRIO OF CARDINAL DEFEATS WITH 7-6 AND 2-1 VICTORIES OVER THE CUBS BEFORE DROPPING THE FINAL GAME OF THE SERIES 2-1.

THE TRIP SOUTH SAW THE REDS OPEN A FOUR-GAME SERIES WITH THE MARLINS BY POSTING A 4-3 WIN BEFORE A SINGLE BAD INNING BY CINCY RELIEVERS LED TO THREE CONSECUTIVE LOSSES, BEFORE THE WEKEND SERIES AGAINST THE PIRATES.

THE READS RETURN HOME FOR THREE=GAME SERIES' AGAINST THE DODGERS AND PADRES.

2010 PREVIEW

FRANCHISE 2010

PITCHING WILL HAVE TO LEAD REDS

BY PAT DORWIN

SPORTSWRITER

CINCINNATI - LEF BY FIVE SOLID STARTING PITCHERS, THE 2010 REDS WILL RELY ON ITS MOUNDSMEN TO TRY AND CAPTURE THE NL CENTRAL.

COMING OFF A DISMAL 6-21 EXHIBITION MARK, THE OFFENSE SHOWED LITTLE SPARK ALTHOUGH DECENT POWER AND SPEED NUMBERS WERE PRODUCED.

"REMEMBER, WE DID LOSE OUR FIRST NINE EXHIBITION GAMES," SAID FIRST-YEAR MANAGER SCOTTY QUEEN. "WE SHOWED SOME RESILIENCE AFTER THAT."

QUEEN, SIGNED TO A FOUR-YEAR DEAL, CAN CONSIDER HIS JOB SAFE FOR THE FUTURE, BUT ALL HIS COACHES ARE IN THE FINAL YEARS OF THEIR CONTRACTS.

"OBVIOUSLY, THAT'S SOMETHING THE ORGANIZATION IS AWARE OF," SAID AN NL SCOUT. " A DECENT START MEANS THOSE GUYS MUST BE GIVEN SECURITY, OR CINCY'S WHOLE SEASON COULD BREAK DOWN VERY QUICKLY."

BACK IN TIME

THERE IS A GLIMMER OF HOPE YET.

WITH MY PS3 APPARENTLY SUFFERING DEEP DAMAGE, BOUGHT "THE SHOW: MLB 10" FOR MY ANCIENT PS2. ALSO, I PASSED ON SOME INCORRECT INFO: SONY STILL PRODUCES PS3s, JUST NOT MY 80 MB VERSION.

A GAME STORE CLERK ADVISED I CHECK WITH SONY AS HE SAID THEY WILL MOST OFTEN REPLACE MY DAMAGED MODEL WITH A 120 MB SLIMLINE VERSION - THAT'S BE WORTH THE $180, ESPECIALLY IF I CAN JEW THEM OUT OF A MOVE ADDITION AS WELL - THEY OWE FROM DEALING WITH UNKOWLEADGABLE JERKS VIA THEIR "HELPLINE."

SO BUZZED ON A FEW BEERS AND FLUSH WITH CASH AFTER TAKING HOME $480 IN A SHORT-HANDED $1-2 NL CASH GAME, I HIT THE COOL BASEMENT AND DRAFTED A REDS FRANCHISE FOR PS2.
